Research
The Department of Computing and Communication Technologies has an excellent reputation for research and knowledge transfer. It has seen a huge growth in its research activity since 2001.
The Department contains a number of active research groups and includes internationally recognised researchers in all its disciplines. Research in the School is supported by the UK Research Councils, the European Commission, industry and charitable foundations.

Electronics Research
Researchers in electronics have interests in Analogue Circuit Design, Reliable Systems Design and Communications. Currently there are 6 PhD research students in the Group. They are working on a range of analog and digital projects using both bipolar and CMOS technologies.

Computer Science
The Department is engaged in some exciting research initiatives in computer science. Around 30 research workers - academic staff, research associates, and PhD students - are involved with computer science research. Research is carried out within five main areas of computer science: Computer Vision, Natural Computation, Web Technologies, Reliable Computer Systems and Applied Formal Methods.

Postgraduate research
Research students can study towards a Master of Science by Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) award. An MSc by Research is a one year programme (full-time) while an MPhil normally takes two years of full-time study or three years part-time to complete. The PhD normally takes a minimum of three years full-time study or five years part-time to complete.
